Walk-A-Thon 2009

Thank you for all your support and donations to make our Fall Walk-a-Thon a success! We raised $12,000.00.  As a result, Mr. Meyer & Mr. Knapp had to kiss a frog! :)

Common Nouns and Proper Nouns

Last week we learned about common and proper nouns.  (Ask your child to tell you the proper noun phrase! :)) Each child we given a noun and had to decide if it was common or proper.  If it was proper they had to write it with correct capitalization.

What a Day for Sara!

Sara, our school therapy dog, was in for a visit.  You can see how the children wear her out at the end of the day! :)

Deep in Thought

Every Monday through Thursday the students are given a prompt in the morning to write in their journal about.  They are strengthening their writing skills and becoming great writers!

Searching for Nouns

Last week to continue learning about nouns, the students were put in groups and searched through a story to find and list as many nouns as they could.

The children have been working very hard this year.  However, there is always time for a smile!

Nouns Can Be People, Places, and Things

Another activity we did this week was sorting nouns into categories.  The students got to pick a frog "hop" it to the correct lily pad.  

Learning About Nouns

To being our unit on nouns we played a sorting game.  The students had to pick an apple and decide if the word was a noun or not a noun.  Ask your child to sing our "noun song" to you.

Popcorn Fun and Punctuation

To end our unit on punctuation and types of sentences we played a popcorn game.  Each child picked a piece of popcorn that had a sentence on it.  They had to determine what type of sentence it was and what punctuation it needed.  If they got it correct they got to crumple the popcorn piece up and toss it into the correct bag.  After we played the game the students enjoyed a popcorn treat while working on an assignment.

Learning About the Seasons

One of the second grade standards is to discuss the different seasons.  To cover this standard the students will be observing a tree all throughout the year.  The students will draw and color the tree and then draw an activity they like to do during that season.  They must also write a sentence describing the activity they drew.

Commands and Exclamations

Last week we learned about different types of sentences.  We had fun learning about commands and exclamations.  The students picked a card and had to decide what type of sentence they had and what punctuation it needed.  If they choose a command they got to read their sentence with the Fire Chief's hat, if they choose an exclamation they got to read their sentence with the joker's hat on!
